Hi every one. Just had my plate delivered and now ready to start serious diet control.
Does any one else have a Gluten Wheat intolerance?
With eggs can you have 1 or 2 as I normally fill up on these for breakfast.
I find gluten wheat free cereals very high in calories. Are there any other suggestions?
look forward to the journey of the new me.

Hiya and welcome, I am sure this topic will expand very soon as it is thought that Kay has coeleic disease and is being tested at the minute, her results come through on Friday..

However for the time being the best sugestions I can make for you are:

Yoghurt - Natural not flavoured, can add some fruit to it as well.

Fruit - Not the most filling of breakfasts though I do like to start my day with some melon, apple, a banana and some grapes.

Porridge - Porridge is great for staving off an appetite until lunchtime. Although oats are generally not advised for those with wheat intolerance, other grains like buckwheat and millet work just as well for porridge.

I hope this helps you :o)

Thank you for your suggestions.
I think alot of my problem is portion size.
Would be interested to hear what others say.

Hi Denise,

I have just been diagnosed as a coeliac so am not very happy - like you I know very little about it but am in a good position to find out.

I do have porridge for breakfast - red band dry weight in the bowl. It does not seem to affect me, but having done some reading there are two trains of thought on this. Anyway you can tell very quickly if it does affect your tummy.

My favourite breakfast is quickly becoming half a can of breakfast apricots Tesco's next to all the Delmonte)served with a small portion of natural yoghurt and a portion of fruit like an apple - it sees me right through til lunchtime.

But - try smoothies (not by the pint) or an omlette 2 eggs a slice of bacon -as long as you stick to around 300 calories you're on track.

I love bread so I am in trouble, but as I have my own breadmaker and a bag of gluten free flour I am going to perfect a recipe - once I do I'll let you have it.

So far though my understanding is I can eat, potatoes, rice, peas and corn for my starch. all protein and vegetables. No gravy - it contains wheat flour and practically no processed food again so invest in a cookbook. In fact I am looking at selling one on www.thedietplate.com called Gluten-free, Wheat-free and dairy-free recipes by Grace Cheetham.

Hi Kay
will try the apricots and yoghurt.
I use GENIUS bread available from tesco or you can go onto website www.geniusglutenfree.com
I make gravy from corn flour, Marmite and herbs.
Doves farm do excellent range of flour.
I have been with this for about 11/2 years but have found it difficult to loose weight hence my final try.
The Celiac society do a comprehensive book with all foods available from the supermarket.
What you have to avoid is the hidden sugar content and high calorific value in a lot of these special foods.
I have now prepared a lot of meals and like I said before its a case of regulating the portion size.
Hope this helps. feel free to contact me

Hi Denise,

Thats good to know, thanks. The Diet Plate will work for you if you stick to the portion sizes, one of the great things is that is suits any food/recipe, whether gluten free, vegetarian, Asian or western style, being completely non-dicatorial it just goes to proove that portion control works exceptionally well as a method of controlling calores and losing weight.

When you first found out you weree coeliac, did you lose weight to begin with just by changing your diet?

My daughter is having tests for this too. It seems more and more common, although I guess one positive knock-on effect of that is having more 'freefrom' foods available.

Hi Kay. Its been a long hard struggle as having the thyroid problems I initially lost weight but then trying to stabilise and having the gluten wheat problem I was thrown into turmoil. You have to change your life totally and home cooking is about the best option. I have found it really difficult as Ive just hit menopause as well and the sugar craving and low energy means every month I go back again. I tried to resist but then became tearful and required a pick up so ate more sugar and it worked and back on track.
I have found that you dont need to change all the recipes as some books suggest but just add zanthium gum and more water to most puddings etc. Doves farm flours are really good. I avoid the cakes and biscuits and make my own. Tried making my own bread but found it very difficult even with a machine. Pastry I use cornflour, rice flour and doves flour. Works well and rolls out. Hope this helps Denise xxxxxxx

When I had to be gluten free for two and a half years I gave up on bread - it seemed less upsetting! But you are so right about the Doves range; it's really good.
