How much is enough? 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 2
How much exercise is enough a week? I know they recommend 30 mins a day and even suggest 10 mins block including just walking. That's great if your new to exercise, very overweight or have restricted mobililty. For some of us exercise has been in our lives already and the body gets used to the limit you have been doing already so it needs more! On the other hand we also have other responsbilities and tight schedules.

What do you think of 3 hours(3 sessions per week of solid exercise)? How much of these sessions to include toning? Maybe being an hour - cardio and tone combined?

Weekends and other tid bits around that as a bonus?

Thanks in advance.

Good question....
Basically for the person who doesnt do any form of exercise, then any form of exercise is good, be it 10 minutes or 30 minutes. However, as you rightly pointed out some of us are used to exercise, then how much is enough? The answer if you believe all the latest studies is this. 1 hour per day of exercise. The old thinking was 30 minutes 5 times a week, but it has been found that this is not enough exercise to boost the metabolism or aid weight loss. For Women it has been found that a minimum of an hour is needed to boost the metabolism and to aid in the weight loss.

That being said I have posted on these threads before about training, what music to listen too and which exercises to do. I especially like the question about cardio or tonning and I will answer that bit quickly here.

TONNING.... with some cardio. It is a misconception that doing tonning exercises or free weights will turn you into Arnie! It wont, well not unless you are going to do it for years and eat a specialised diet. Tonning increses the lean muscle mass in the body, meaning you will burn more calories, and over a longer period of time. Cardio is a quick burst and has no sustained weight loss implications, except for the fact that you will burn 800 or so calories in an hour.

So, do both but a large proportion of your exercise should be resistance/free weights/tonning with a small section being cardio.

HI there!

Thanks for the info. Toning and cardio it is and it makes sense. Anyway I know one hour seems to be the guidelines but what 5 days a week?

What do most of you do?

I try and aim for 5 days a week sometimes 6, depending on what is going on with work, kids etc... But it doesnt have to be in the gym, running round with your kids in the garden or at a park... you can also use things like park benches to do push ups and dips! Also you dont need to use heavy weight, just up the reps you do... If i cant get out to the gym I try and do a jog, for at least 30mins then follow with some ab work and push ups at home.. Davina's workout dvds are great too, both my husband & I do them. Hope this helps! Getting back into exercise can be tough, I know, I have 5 discs out of place so have to watch everything I do!! Good luck!!!
